SFRS Anthony Nolan Partnership Volunteers

Anthony Nolan

In 2008, Ally Boyle was diagnosed with a blood disorder. He was told his best chance of survival was a stem cell transplant. As Area Commander for Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Service, Ally recognised the synergy between the service and Anthony Nolan, with the shared aim of saving lives. He contacted Anthony Nolan, and this life-changing partnership was born.

We are delighted to be celebrating our 15th year of working together in 2024. In the past year alone, SFRS have recruited 1035 people to the stem cell register, delivering 19 events in schools across Scotland and enabling 11 people to donate their stem cells. This takes the total number of potential donors recruited to over 20,000, more than 100 of whom have gone on to donate their stem cells.

Every one of those 20,000 potential donors learnt about their lifesaving potential from a talk delivered by the incredible team of SFRS Tactical Leads and volunteers. The SFRS Tactical Leads, supported by hundreds of SFRS volunteers, organise and run every education session and donor recruitment event in schools across Scotland, giving up their own time between shifts to help save lives in partnership with Anthony Nolan.
