Reprieve

Reprieve

Reprieve is a high-impact charity, fighting to end the death penalty and extreme human rights abuses through litigation, advocacy and campaigns. In the last year, together with our network of fellows and partners, we have achieved extraordinary breakthroughs, transforming individual lives, while catalysing broader change around the world. In December, our decade-long resentencing project in Malawi came to a close with the final nine people who had been sentenced to the mandatory death penalty receiving new sentences. Remarkably, seven of these individuals were cleared for immediate release. We started this project alongside a coalition of partners in 2014, and since then have secured freedom for 163 people, and emptied Malawi’s death row. Malaysia abolished the mandatory death penalty for all offences last year, following tireless efforts by Reprieve and partners – and we moved rapidly to launch a new project to secure justice for over 900 people on Malaysia’s death row. Meanwhile, Pakistan abolished the death penalty for all drug offences following years of advocacy by Reprieve and the Foundation for Fundamental Rights. These are just a few highlights in a year that has seen Reprieve secure justice for individuals, alongside systemic changes which will benefit generations to come.
