Motability Foundation

The Motability Foundation is a national charity that carries out grant-giving, research and innovation to make transport accessible for all disabled people.

Three years ago, we had two main activities. First was overseeing the Motability Scheme, a car-leasing scheme for eligible disabled people. It has 750,000 customers and is run by a separate company we contract, Motability Operations. Second was grant-giving to around 15,000 Motability Scheme customers to help them access the Scheme and pay for adaptations needed.

Since then, our remit has transformed. We now carry out research, innovation and grant-giving to provide transport and make it accessible for all 16 million disabled people. This step-change has meant an expansion of our audiences – government, B2B, charities and disabled people – and in our communications and influencing activities. It has meant a brand refresh and a change to our operating name to clarify our identity and what we now offer. It has meant taking the organisation on a journey to show how disabled people should be at the heart of our communications.

Behind this change, the communications team has grown, tested new approaches, and influenced the Board to create and imbed change, and achieve greater impact for disabled people.
